See the precious baby in the button on my sidebar? Her name is Tenlee. Linda from Prairie Flower Farm has been asking for prayer for Tenlee. This is what Linda wrote: She had heart surgery on Monday January 25, everything went wonderful and all day she responded very well. On Tuesday Morning the respiratory tech went to give her a breathing treatment and the machine got reversed and sucked all the air from her lungs. This stopped her heart. They put her on life support and gave her 50-50 chance of surviving. Thank you ladies for praying.

It Could Be A New Record

I think I have set a new record for being away from my blog - 4 months is a long time! I am having so much fun being back "home" that I just have let a few things go.

I am settled in my job and finally have my own place to live. I moved into a small, 2 bedroom duplex the week before Christmas and am now in the process of decorating. Or, maybe I should say, collecting home furnishings. Since I don't have a garage most of the painting projects are going to have to wait until Spring. I will have lots of before and after pictures to share.

When I left Washington, I only packed the necessities and things dear to my heart. I have had to completely start over with furniture and many things like pots and pans, glasses, towels, washcloths, etc - the daily stuff that we just take for granted. I am so grateful to my family and friends for their donations to my new home. My brother and sister-in-law got a new flat screen TV for Christmas and I got their old one and the entertainment center. My sister took me shopping for things for my living room and bathroom. My bedroom outfit belonged to the parents of a high school friend. Other things I have collected from used furniture stores and garage sales.

I love, love, love my new shower curtain. It is Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic from Target and is pale gray cotton with vertical columns of white roses. I even got the "bling" rhinestone shower curtain rings and darker gray rugs for the floor. Now the walls will need to be painted as the tan color really shows a yellow cast next to the gray.

The bedroom outfit I got is mid-century blonde straight from the 50's or 60's. When I get done with it, it will be a satin black with brushed nickel pulls. I think it's going to look great with a pink and white rose theme. I have a gorgeous quilt all picked out and am deciding what I want to do for window coverings - right now I have bath towels nailed up at the windows!

My sister and I have decided to open a booth at a local craft/antique mall. I will start with my soap and things, she will add furniture that she has collected and wants to get rid of. I will be on the hunt for things to "pretty up" and hope to be sharing pictures of that too. It's been a long time since I've redone any furniture and made pretties - I am excited about our new venture.

Life is so good! I do miss both of the girls and my grandkids, but I am so much happier here. I truly did not realize how depressed and unhappy I was. It had been going on for so long that it had become "normal". It wasn't normal and now I know that. It feels good to laugh, be happy and have things to look forward to. God has blessed me beyond measure!!

Finally Home!

I finally made it home to Illinois! I arrived in St. Louis on August 24th to 100 degrees and high humidity. By the time I got off the plane, got my luggage and got to a waiting car, I was drenched! Welcome to mid-west weather.

I stayed in St. Louis for two days to visit a friend and am now at my friend, Pat's. Pat and I went to high school together and had not seen each other for 40 years. We picked up just like it was yesterday and are having so much fun together.

My car finally shipped yesterday and should be here by the end of the week. I have pictures to upload but I won't do that until I get my computer set up. I've already got some craft shows lined up and am anxious to get my soap supplies so I can begin working on Fall products.

God has blessed every step of this move, including providing me with a job right away. I started work last Tuesday as an administrative assistant/part-time activities assistant at Pleasant Hill Village. Pleasant Hill is an independent living center and also a nursing facility which is run by the Church of the Brethren. I am working in the independent living center and loving it! Because so many of the residents are from this area, I have met several that knew my parents and other family members.

Life is good and I wake up each day thankful that I'm finally back in Illinois. I have been blessed beyond measure!

Starting Over

I have been absolutely negligent of my blog for months now. I admit that I have become a Facebook junkie!! But I also have been at a total loss as to what to write about for a long, long time. I finally have something I feel will be fun - my move to start my life over in Illinois! Facebook has been a big part of making that happen because I've become reacquainted with so many childhood and high school friends who are helping me with this move.

When Stephany was 5, and my dad was starting to lose his health, I wanted to move back to Illinois to be near my dad and, hopefully, live a more simple life. That was 12 years ago! Throughout that time I have prayed and planned, begged God to make it happen, have gotten mad at God when it didn't happen, and, finally, resolved myself to the fact that it probably never would happen. I never gave up on the dream. I just decided to quit obsessing about it so much and live my life where I've been planted. I should know by now that when you finally surrender something you want so badly that God will step in. If it is His will, He will make it happen!

Through different situations, I am now getting to move back to the place I love more than anywhere! My car will be loaded on a flat bed trailer on August 23rd. It will be moved, packed to the ceiling, with the things that I am taking with me. I will be flying out of Portland on August 24th. God has provided the way for me to be able to afford to do this and I don't have to drive 2000 miles by myself!

The bittersweet part is that I am leaving both of my daughters, my son-in-law and my grandchildren behind. Stephany is staying with her dad so that she can go to high school in Vancouver. I am praying that this separation will help her to be more responsible as I have a tendency to mother her to death. It is time for her to experience some life without Mom being there to "help". I will get to see her at Christmas break, but I'm sure it's going to be a long four months for us. Missy and I have only been apart for 6 months of her life when I moved out here and she lived with her dad in Iowa. I have never been apart from my grandkids. I will now find out what it is like to be a long distance Nana. Emma just turned one and it so easy for them to forget you at that age. All of us will be on Skype a lot!! Especially so that Emma can see her Nana and, hopefully, will remember who I am. I get teary just thinking about the goodbyes!

I haven't been good about pictures in the past, but I got a new camera for Christmas and I plan on using it a lot to document everything. I hope that you'll stop by so you can read about my new adventures.

Quick and Easy Pillowcase

Isn't this pillowcase cute? I just love red and blue together - it is so 50's looking. The fun part about this pillowcase is there are no exposed seams and it can be made in about 20 minutes. I will be hitting my fabric stash tomorrow to see what I can come up. I know that I have some beautiful vintage ribbon that needs to be shown off on one of the pillowcases!

Breathe Easy All Purpose Cleaner

I was looking through my recipe files and found this one for a great breathe easy all purpose cleaner. This a recipe that I got from a book by Sandy Maine. I did make changes to the recipe and show those. It works great and smells so good. It actually makes me want to clean and that's something to say! The recipe uses essential oils of sweet orange, peppermint and tea tree. I have also substituted lavender essential oil for the sweet orange. The benefits of the essential oils are the aromatherapy, sweet orange will cut grease, peppermint and tea tree disinfect. An added plus is that these will actually keep bugs away - bugs don't like sweet orange or lavender.

If you decide to use this recipe on a regular basis I would recommend ordering your essential oils from a supplier. You can get them in a natural foods store but they are horribly expensive. Wholesale Supplies Plus is one of my favorite suppliers. There is a $30 minimum order but shipping is included in the pricing.

I store the cleaner in a gallon milk jug. It will separate after standing and sometimes will get thick. I just shake and will add a little water to the jug if necessary.

Disinfecting Soft Soap (Herbal Homekeeping by Sandy Maine)

5 cups grated castile soap (I made my own but you could use a natural castile from the store like Kirks)
1/2 cup baking soda
1 tsp borax
6 cups hot water
1 tsp eucalyptus essential oil (I used 1 tbsp sweet orange, 1/2 tbsp peppermint, 1 tsp tea tree -- I like the scent stronger)

Put grated soap into a 3 quart stainless saucepan and add hot water. Simmer for 15 minutes on low heat. Remove from heat and add baking soda, borax, and essential oils. (NOTE: Here's the adjustments that I made to this recipe): Use a larger pot than 3 quart because when you add the baking soda and borax it will foam a lot (ask me how I know this -- had cleaner all over the stove). In fact, in my notes I wrote to let the soap and water cool for 10 minutes before adding baking soda and borax. I also am waiting to add essential oils until the mixture cools below 140 degrees, otherwise the essential oils will just evaporate from the heat.

Store in a labeled plastic jug or squirt bottle. Shake before using (mixture will separate after it sits). I use about 1/4 to 1/2 cup per gallon of water when cleaning counters, floors, fixtures, refrigerator, etc.

A Sinner Saved By Grace

I've gotten in the habit of watching gospel music videos on Saturday evenings. I love the Gaither Vocal Band and they are definitely my favorites. I found this song tonight and it just touched my heart so much.

This song is my story - I am a sinner saved by the grace of God. If you could have seen where I started and where I am now you would understand the power of God's saving grace. I was an angry, bitter woman. A heathen who loved to run around, drink, swear and I thought that was life. I was in a horrible marriage to an abusive man and had a 16 year old daughter who was pregnant. I had nothing to lean on except myself and I was angry all the time.

I accepted the Lord when I was 15 years old in a little Baptist church in Virden, IL. But I didn't live my life for Christ. I continued in my sinful ways for many years. In 1986 a co-worker asked me to go to church with her and her husband. I was raised a Methodist and, while it was a wonderful church, it was not a Bible teaching church. We never read the Bible at home and it was rarely taught from on Sunday morning. When I walked into the Nazarene church with my friend I wondered what in the world I had gotten into. These people were carrying Bibles, they were raising their hands in praise, and they said "Amen" whenever they agreed with the pastor's teachings. That was not how people were supposed to act in church, or at least that is what I thought.

I continued to attend the church, bought a Bible, and found the joy of learning from God's word. When the pastor would teach I would soak it up like a sponge. On Easter Sunday 1987 I re-dedicated my life to the Lord and I have been living for Him ever since. This song just brings tears to my eyes because I realize that without the power of the Holy Spirit and God's grace I would still be that angry, bitter woman. That doesn't mean I'm perfect. I am very far from that. But the freedom that I enjoy in Christ allows me the opportunity to ask for forgiveness every day and I know that I will be forgiven. What a joyful life I have now!! I thank God for His loving mercy and for caring enough about an old sinner like me to send His son Jesus Christ to die for my sins. It is the greatest gift I have ever been given.

A Clean Slate

What is it about the New Year approaching that makes me want to clean and organize?? Is it because it's a clean slate and a fresh start?? I know I am not the only one as I see all the bins, totes and organizing supplies being displayed prominently in the stores right now.

Actually, the cleaning and organizing bug start as soon as Christmas is over and I put away the decorations. This week's project will be my bedroom/craft closet. I had a garage sale last summer and had fabric up for sale. What didn't sell went back in the closet but it's still in the boxes. Things have been piled on top of the boxes until you can't even see the closet floor. It is really ugly in there - I will not be sharing pictures.

Do you get the same bug this time of year? What will you be cleaning and organizing? Do you have any tips to share?

Blessed Christmas

I hope that you enjoyed a blessed Christmas. We sure did! Christmas Eve was busy with last minute baking, delivering goodies to friends, church, dinner and a quiet evening at home.

I got help with gift wrapping (which I hate to do) from Elf Stephany. By the time she got done her Christmas cheer had diminished a bit.

Christmas morning we opened gifts at home and then went to Missy's for brunch and more gifts. Christien, Stephany and Emma had a great time. This was Emma's first Christmas and she was so cute with lots of smiles to share.

Santa brought Emma a new dolly - her first. It is a sweet Precious Moments dolly that says "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep."

Daddy and Emma shared a special Christmas moment. He loves her so much and is such a good dad!

Christmas Cards

I miss getting Christmas cards. I know that it's expensive and it is so much easier to send an electronic card. But there is something so personal about receiving a card in the mail. You know that the person that sent it took time to fill out the cards, buy the stamps and go to the post office to mail them. I will admit that I don't send cards anymore either.

Not so very long ago, and especially when I was growing up, it was exciting to go to the mailbox in December. I'd see all these brightly colored envelopes and could hardly wait to open them to see who they were from. Sometimes there would be a letter inside telling all about that has happened in the sender's life in the last year. We would take the cards and tape them around the dining room door frame. It would be fun to see if we could get enough cards to go around the whole frame by the time Christmas came.

A few years ago I started putting the cards that I received in a basket on the coffee table. Then, when Christmas was over, we'd take one card each day and pray for the person and/or family that sent it. I miss doing that.

I am going to send cards next year. Today I thought that if I set aside a little money each month then the expense of sending cards wouldn't be so bad when next Christmas rolls around. I want to personalize Christmas again, even if it's just from my little corner of the world.

Organizing

My dining room is a mess!! All of my supply orders came in last week plus I've been working on product. Because I don't have a separate work or storage area, it is all done in my kitchen and dining room. I have supplies in the front closet and under the sink in the guest bathroom. Every time I want to work I have to drag things out from all over the downstairs. I finally got a shelf put in the dining room and am now organizing so things can be more efficient. Here's what my dining room looked like until about 10 pm tonight.

Santa Came Early

Santa brought me an early Christmas gift - a new camera! I have never had a brand new camera and this one is fantastic. It is a Canon PowerShot SX120 IS - whatever that means. All I know is it takes awesome pictures and my blog will be more colorful.

If you have read my blog for a while you will remember Sophie, our cottage kitty (she is in the photo at the right with Stephany). She was only 4 weeks old when we brought her home and we didn't think she'd make it for a while. I had to hand feed her formula, she had an eye infection, and numerous other things. Sophie has grown into a lovely young lady and now has a friend named Jude. We got Jude when he was 8 weeks old and he is now 7 months old. I wasn't sure how Sophie would react but they have been like two peas in a pod from the very first minute. They are always together and when we had to take Jude to the vet overnight to be neutered, Sophie cried and cried. There was no consoling her until he got back home.

Here's the first picture from my new camera showing both of the babies laying behind the couch watching squirrels out the sliding glass doors - one of their favorite things to do together.

Tomorrow's picture will be of the explosion of soap supplies in my dining room! I am going to bear it all and show everyone how messy it has been for the last week. But I am organizing and will show the after pictures too.

Christmas Tree Ideas

I would love to have a Christmas tree that looks like this. Hundreds of lights and all twinkly. However, I have 2 cats! Last year we only had 1 cat and Miss Sophie knocked the tree over 5 days in a row. I finally took it down and put up a small one on the mantle. This year Jude has been added to our family. He is only 6 months old and into everything. I know how it's going to go if I put up the tree. Sigh.

I need some ideas on a cat proof tree. Help!!!

Getting Ready for Thanksgiving

I can't believe that Thanksgiving is almost here! It is my favorite holiday. I love cooking the meal and just having time to spend with family. Everyone will be at my house this year except for my grandson Justin. We will have lots to eat, play games, and enjoy each other's company. I have put off my grocery shopping so I will have to go on Saturday. I am sure the store will be crowded and the lines will be long. I am praying for a good attitude because patience is not my virtue!

I have so many things to be thankful for this year. God is always so good and so faithful. I am thankful for God's grace and sending His son Jesus to be the Lord and Savior of my life. I don't deserve the grace but He gives it freely to me every day.

I am thankful for my beautiful family, for our nice warm home, for having food to eat every day, and the daily blessings that God provides.

This year I am particularly thankful for Stephany's sobriety. Four months ago our life was in chaos. Day by day everything has gotten better and life is starting to feel normal again. My beautiful daughter is sober, happy, and thankful for her second chance at a wonderful life. God has blessed us in this situation too, and because of what we've gone through, we have the testimony of His love and grace to share with others.

I am thankful for all of you who follow my blog and return again and again to read my ramblings. Thank you for your comments - they are a blessing to me. Thank you for your prayers for our family. I love you and cherish you!

Boot Camp

I never thought I'd be going to boot camp but I am! I started Etsy's Holiday Boot Camp today (it actually started 9/23 so I have catching up to do). It is a series of newsletters with homework designed to help you get the most out of your Etsy shop for the holidays. For me it's about the business of getting down to business. I need to treat what I do as a business and not as a hobby. I need to learn how to run my business so I'm going to boot camp. Today one of the assignments was to write a mission statement for your business. I hate stuff like this. I don't want to have to think, I just want to create! But it's part of the process so I did it. Once I got started it was good and really made me think about what my mission is for The Rustic Cottage. I am baring my soul here and it's not something that I am comfortable with so here goes.

My mission statement:

To always maintain my priorities in the correct order - God first, family second, and business last.

To create high quality, handcrafted bath and body products using natural and organic ingredients.

To share information and educate others on the benefits of products made with natural and organic ingredients.

To build a rapport with my customers so they don't feel like "just another sale" and provide them with products that are helpful and benefit them through healthier skin.

To be fair and honest in all my business dealings.

To be a full-time business woman running a socially and environmentally conscious business doing what I love and providing for my family.

I hope that by reading this you will know where my heart is and I hope that it may help you with your business too!!!

Google and Lotion Bars

Have you ever Googled yourself? I occasionally check my business name to see where it is in the rankings. Today I Googled "quilters lotion bar" to see how many others are making them. I was very pleasantly surprised when my lotion bar came up #1!! Even had a picture!! How cool is that??

Friday was my last day of work. The business I work for has just not recovered fully from the financial downturn in 2008. I was working full-time and laid off in May 2008. I was blessed to be called back part-time and have been back to work for almost a year. Now I am unemployed again but, quite honestly, I am glad. Everything that our family has been through this past year has let me drained emotionally and physically. I need some time off to clean my house, get rested, and work on my business. In fact, I am hoping that I will be able to remain self-employed. It is pure joy to me to create and work with my soap and lotions. I have spent the day working on my Etsy and Artfire shops and that leads back to why I Googled myself!

Barn House And Vintage Gathering Sales

Emma took her mommy and me to the Barn House sale in Battle Ground today! This is the first one for all of us and the first sale for Missy & I in a long time. We got there at noon and the place was actually starting to get emptied of wares - it's that popular! I did find lots of things to inspire me though. After Barn House we traveled down the road to the Vintage Gatherings sale - loved it! Lots of vendors, lots of vintage treasures, and reasonable prices! I got pictures at Barn House but not at Vintage Gatherings (Nana was carrying Emma around so Mom could shop). Enjoy!

This wonderful old bath tub greeted us as we walked in to the gate. It was filled with straw and pillows.

Isn't this chandelier the best?? It was accented with dried hops.

Love this chair and the pillow! I want to learn to screen print. The sun was so bright that it washed out some of my pics - sorry.

Linen apron - these were just the cutest things ever! I'm inspired to sew again. Now to get my hands on some linen.

Beautiful displays everywhere - sunflowers make me happy and the vase was so pretty.

I am so in love with this bolster pillow by Maison Douce and the chair's not too shabby either! Can't you just see the bolster at the head of a bed covered with a fluffly down comforter, quilts, and lots of pillows?

Back On A Schedule

It has been a busy summer and now is turning into a busy Fall!! Steph is enrolled in school and will start on Monday. She is going to Summit View High School which is an alternative school in the Battle Ground District. We had her orientation last week and I am so impressed with the school!

She goes to school two days a week from 1 to 4 and then the rest of the time is independent study. She has one on one time with each of her teachers for up to an hour. That is exactly what she needs and this will help her get back on track. She has lots of credits to make up but that's ok. At least she wants to go to school now!

Our life has settled into a happy routine and is much more calm now - if that's possible with a teenager in the house. We still take it one day at a time but each day is a blessing. I have been so wrapped up in Stephany for so long that I'm having to learn to do things for me again. I started attending Al Anon and I know that is a start. The soap shelves are totally bare and it's time for me to get busy with that again. It's soon to be bazaar season and I plan on doing several this year. I need to get my creative juices flowing again.

Emma has brought so much joy into our family! I love to go visit and just hold her. There is nothing better than that sweet baby smell. Missy brought her over last Saturday for her first visit to Nana's house and I even got a smile!

Christien started Middle School last week and seems to like it really well. I just can't wrap my head around the fact that he is old enough to be in Middle School!!!

God is so good and so faithful!!! I see His mercy every day when I look into the clear, bright, happy eyes of my daughter!

My beautiful granddaughter Emma was born on July 26th!! She is a tiny little thing and only weighed 5 lbs when she was born but she and her mama are doing fine!! She now weighs 5 lbs 11 ozs. Emma is like a breath of fresh air in our family and we have all needed that.

The same day that Emma was born we left for Yakima for 3 days of family therapy at Stephany's treatment facility. I wanted to wait at the hospital to meet my new grandbaby and she waited until 6:17 pm to arrive. I held her for 5 minutes and then left because we had a 4 hour drive ahead of us.

The therapy went very well and Steph's dad and I were able to tell all the things that her use has done to us and to our family. One thing that we learned is that our whole family has been sick - not just her. It was a very helpful 3 days and opened our eyes to many things. Especially that we are not alone in this as the room was filled with 20 other families going through the very same thing. My heart just broke for the families - many were adult patients who had a wife or husband attending as the family member.

Steph graduated from her treatment on August 5th and is now back home. She has had 38 days of sobriety and is doing so well. She attends 3 outpatient groups a week and has been going to AA meetings. That has been her decision and is a huge step in her recovery. There is still a long way for her to go but we take it one day at a time!

It's Been A Month Since I've Written???

A month is way too long to go without writing on my blog. I could make the usual excuses of being busy with summer gardening, canning, etc - not the case. It's been a very painful and emotional month for me and for Stephany. It has been one of the hardest periods of my life. I had to be able to find the right words to post on my blog.

If you are a regular reader then you know the struggles we have been going through with Stephany's drug use. She started outpatient treatment and things were going along pretty well for about a week. Then it went from bad to worse. After the last time that she ran away she quit smoking pot only to replace it with alcohol.

I talked to Steph's outpatient leader and we both agreed that she needed to go to inpatient treatment. Stephany agreed that she needed to go and on July 8th she checked into a facility near Yakima, WA. I had to spend two days there in parent meetings and both of us had to meet with psyhcologists. During that time Steph said she wasn't staying - I think she realized she wasn't going to be on vacation. In the state of Washington a child can make their own decisions about that kind of thing. She cried, begged, and pleaded. She got mad and lashed out at me. On Friday we had to meet with a counselor at 12:30 and when we were signing paperwork Steph looked at me and said "I assume by signing all these papers that means I'm staying." I just said a very matter of fact "yes." She was so angry with me that she would hardly tell me goodbye. We hugged and I walked out of the room and out of the door of the facility. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do.

Steph has been there 2 weeks and has had some very rough days. She could have no contact with us for the first 7 days. That is a very good thing as that is a crucial time for a new patient. I was able to write to her and have sent her a letter every day. We got to talk for the first time last Thursday and I was amazed at how good she sounded. On Friday she had a very bad day and they let her call me. She said she wanted to quit and come home. I told her to give it through the weekend and we would talk on Sunday evening. When we talked on Sunday I could hear a strength in her voice that I haven't heard in a very long time. She said that she was staying because she was going to complete something that she committed to. That is a major step and something that hasn't happened for a couple of years.

Steph said that she is learning so much from the lectures, videos, and the AA meetings that she attends. She has to go to 2 meetings a week and really likes them.

But all of this has not happened by chance. It is God!!! So many people have been praying for her and I have made sure to let her know that. I have been in constant prayer for her. She is working hard and He is giving her the strength. Next Tuesday we have to go to her treatment facility to spend 3 days with her in family counseling. I am sure this is going to be a hard time as it is probably going to open lots of wounds. But sometimes the wounds have to opened to let the poison out so that they can heal.

It has taken me two weeks just to let go of much of the stress that I have been feeling for months. There has been so much turmoil in our home. I can put my head on the pillow at night and not have to worry about where she is.

Steph will get out of treatment on August 5th. I know that coming home is going to be hard because the temptations will be here. But I also know that God is faithful to her and to me. He will walk her through this journey. She may have a relapse. I pray she doesn't. But if she does I know that there is nothing I can do about it. I have to let go and let God work on her. He knows the plan. I just have to go along with it.

Melvin Baines was, and still is, my hero. He wasn't a perfect dad and made lots of mistakes in his life. He only had an 8th grade education and wasn't a polished man. Dad wanted to go to high school but it was during the Depression. His family had a farm outside Farmersville, IL and needed his help. He quit school to work on the family farm.

Dad proudly served his country in WWII and it was one of the greatest accomplishments of his life. He left his wife and 3 month old son to go to Okinawa Japan for 2 years. Daddy was one of the hardest working men I have ever known. He was a diesel mechanic by trade. I remember many cold IL winter nights when he would get called out to work on a truck that had broken down. He would lay in the snow by the side of the highway to fix this truck to earn money for his family.

What I remember the most is the unconditional love he had for all 3 of his children. He supported and loved us no matter what. When I was a senior in high school and had to tell my dad that I was having a baby he never criticized or got mad. All he said was "I love you girl and I will support you and the baby no matter what." That's just how he was.

In later years. when I moved to Washington, we would visit by phone. We talked every Saturday morning to catch up. I loved those phone calls. He always had a funny story to tell about one of the grandkids and a joke to tell me. What I wouldn't give for one more phone call so we could visit.

I am very lucky to have had him for my dad. I love you Daddy and I miss you so much!! Happy Father's Day!

Back Home

Stephany is back home. She came back on Monday. It's been a rough few days but hopefully she's back on the right track. She goes tomorrow to meet with her group leader to discuss in-patient treatment. We all think that may be the best thing for her right now.

Getting Closer

If you look on the left column of my blog you'll see a little ticker counting the days until my new grandbaby arrives! The days are getting close and I'm so excited. Missy and Sammy have decided to name her Emma. I think that is the sweetest name and so old fashioned.

This afternoon is Missy's baby shower and it will be such fun to see all the precious things that she gets for Emma. Nana got her something very special - a keepsake - but I can't share it here yet. I don't want to give the surprise away.

Don't you just love the smell of a baby?? I love to nuzzle my nose in the back of the neck just at their hair line. I've done that with all my kids. I will rock them and nuzzle, breathing in their beautiful baby smell. It's been 11 years since I've been able to do that. I'm getting the rocking chair all warmed up because Emma and I have miles to rock and time spent nuzzling!!

Stephany Update

I feel like all I've been writing on my blog lately are unhappy things. I've always tried to keep it upbeat and happy. But, once again, I am posting asking for your prayers for Stephany.

She was doing very well, started rehab, and I thought things were going along good. But I was being fooled because all this time Stephany has still been using drugs. I knew it in my mind and in my heart but when I would confront her she would tell me lies. Last Monday she was supposed to be at Bible study, left the study to be with friends, and didn't come home all night. Things came to a head today and Stephany ran away from home. This time was different because she left with a full backpack and had planned it. I called the police and they will pick her up if they see her on the street but won't look for her. It's almost 11 pm and I have no idea where my daughter is.

My heart hurts but all I can do is pray for her, for her protection. God knows best and He will see both of us through this time.

Saying Goodbye

My husband's grandmother is 93 years old. Grandma Jerry has lived in her own apartment until about 4 months ago when she had to go to assisted living. About a week ago Grandma fell in her assisted living apartment and hit her head on a glass coffee table. She was rushed to the hospital and an MRI was done. The doctors discovered a spot where there was blood on her brain. The doctor said that he could do surgery but Grandma would probably not make it through the surgery. Grandma said she did not want the surgery and they sent her home. The doctor said that she could live for a long time if the bleeding did not get worse.

This morning at 6:30 we got a phone call saying Grandma had been rushed to the hospital because she was having pain. As the doctors were taking care of her, she just went to sleep. An immediate MRI was done of her head and there was more blood on her brain and it had started to swell. The doctor said he didn't think she'd make it through the day. This afternoon Grandma was transferred back to the nursing facility and put in the hospice area. Since she has a living will and a DNR, she is now on end of life care.

Steve and Stephany were with Grandma most of the day. I was going over at noon but since they were transferring her to hospice I waited until this evening. Steve and I went over about 6:30 so I could say goodbye. It is always so hard because when you walk in the room the person just doesn't look like themselves. Grandma just looked so small and frail in that hospital bed. I leaned over to whisper in her ear, hoping that she could hear me tell her how much I love her and thanking her for welcoming me into her family 20 years ago. Then I told her to just rest and let go - that it was time for her to go be with Jesus and Grandpa Chet. Steve and I joined hands over her bed and each of us put a hand on her shoulder as we prayed. It was a sweet time of saying goodbye to a lady that has brought so much love and joy into our lives.

As we were leaving I thought about how death can be a peaceful thing. When you're a Christian you know that death isn't the end - it's only the beginning. For me, it makes it easier to say goodbye to a loved one. The tears are still there and so is the sorrow but there is peace. I shall miss my talks with Grandma but I know that we will only be separated for a short time. One day we will have eternity to have talks!!

Progress

I'm making progress with the cold. Still coughing and nose is still a little stuffy but at least I don't feel like death warmed over!

Steph is making some good progress!! Last night she went with some friends, I told her the curfew and she was home one time. I was holding my breath. At some point I will stop holding my breath every time she leaves the house. She got home, came into my room, and sat on the edge of the bed to tell me everything she had done while she was with her friends. This is a HUGE step forward - the first time she's ever done this!! They went to Shari's, bought 3 orders of fries to share, drank cokes, laughed and talked. She told me how much fun she had and that she is having to learn how to have fun without drugs. But she had fun!!! When she left my room I gave a huge thumbs up to God for He is the one that is working the miracles in her life right now.

Her counseling is going great and we got the ok to make our move in June! We will be finding a place for her to go in IL but they felt that the change would actually be a positive thing for her. So in a little over 7 weeks we will be heading east to start our new life. We are both so excited. My garage sale will be 2 weeks from Saturday so I have to get busy pricing and organizing.

Thanks so much for your prayers for Steph and for me. She still has a very long road to go but the changes I have seen in her in the last 2 weeks are really good. It is a day by day process. God is faithful and we are both trusting Him with everything we have!

When I brought my beautiful daughters home from the hospital I was so full of love, hope and joy. I looked at that little child in my arms and dreamed of what their future would be. My children are God's children first and He has entrusted them to me as their steward while they are here on this earth. I read His manual for how to parent, I prayed for them, and loved on them. I am so blessed that both of my girls have accepted the Lord. Missy, being my quiet one, came to know Jesus in her own private way. I had the privilege of praying with Stephany when she accepted the Lord at 5 years of age. When Stephany was 9 she made the decision to be baptized. This is the little girl that would come home from school so excited that she had prayed with someone on the playground at school and witnessed to them of the Lord.

I always thought that because my girls know Jesus personally they would somehow be "protected" from the things of the world. I know that is absolutely not true and I have been humbled because some of those terrible things of the world have entered my home. This is horribly hard for me to write, and embarrassing, but I feel that I have to. My blog is a place of release for me and, I hope, a blessing for others. These are things that I need to write about so that maybe the pain will somehow leave my body and soul for a bit.

Stephany has been struggling with anxiety and depression since she was in the 7th grade. Some of that is the fault of both of her parents who have had a bad marriage. Some of it is the fault of a dad who loves his daughter but is not an involved parent. But her problems are not all the fault of me or her dad. Some are problems of her own choosing. I have a former friend who would tell me on a daily basis that I just needed to be harder on Stephany. That I needed to be a firmer disciplinarian. You don't know how hard I have tried - and on my own because her dad refuses to be involved in that area. I have grounded her, taken away the cell phone, restricted computer use, and any other thing that I could think of to remove as a form of punishment. I know that this former friend probably still reads my blog. I'm sure that she will delight in some small way that what she has "predicted" for my daughter has finally come true. She has a son who has always attended Christian school, is on fire for the Lord, and never gives her many problems. This is the reason that we are no longer friends - I just could not take listening to another minute of having my daughter and her son compared and me being told I'm not hard enough on my daughter. But I also remember that my pastor and his wife went through the very same thing with their daughter that I am going through, maybe some worse things, and I know that they were good parents.

But when you're walking through this hard time with your child you begin to doubt yourself. I have come to realize that I am a good parent. I have been praying and fighting for my daughter every day since she's been born. Now I just need to say the words although it's hurts me so much. Stephany has become involved with drugs. It started with marijuana and has now progressed to experimentation with cocaine and ecstasy. There have been other issues that go along with this - stealing money from her dad to buy drugs, sneaking out of the house at all hours, taking all of her Christmas and birthday money to buy drugs, lying, and on and on.

What could I have done to prevent this? Probably not much. I have done everything that I know how to do as a parent. Stephany has been in church since she was 5 days old and has been raised in a Christian home. She has never seen these things in our home and has always been told how bad they are. Her father is a recovering alcoholic - sober for 21 years - so we don't even have alcohol in our home. But the bent towards addiction is hereditary - that is a medical fact - and Stephany inherited that bent. It also runs on my side of the family. That, coupled with her anxiety and low self-esteem, have pushed her to try things to make her "feel" better.

My daughter is a beautiful girl inside and out. She is a child of God and He loves her more than I do. She is smart, funny, kind, and compassionate. Right now she is walking in a dark valley. But the bright side - Praise God - is that Stephany is willing to go to rehab and counseling. She wants to be better and wants to turn her life around. She knows that Jesus is the only answer. She tells me that she wants to be better but doesn't know how. That is why we are getting professional help for her. Next Thursday Stephany will be going into drug rehab. Right now we don't know if it will be outpatient or inpatient. She is willing to do either to get better. Stephany and I were moving to IL in June. For now, those plans have had to be put on hold. We are staying here so that she can get the help that she needs. When the professionals say that it is ok to go, then we will move. I know there might be set backs for Stephany. I know parents who go through this with their kids their whole lives. I am praying that is not that case.

We have a long road ahead of us - especially Stephany. My comfort is that I know that Jesus is walking with us and holding our hands. If I wasn't sure of that I don't know if I could walk much further. Please keep Stephany in your prayers. I need them too. We will be able to feel them and will draw strength from them. I know that God has great things in store for Stephany. God will use this time in our lives as a testimony to His glory. God is good and He is so faithful. I was listening to a song on the radio yesterday - "I Will Praise You in this Storm". I am praising God in this storm. I know that the sun will be peaking through the clouds again. I am hanging onto that hope.

It's A Girl!

I went with Missy last Monday for her 20 week ultrasound. The baby is perfect, healthy and a girl! We are all so excited. I'm not sure what the name will be as they have a couple picked out. Emma is one choice (which I love) or Amelia. Now I can start sewing girly things and making tutus. Our little sweetheart will arrive sometime in the middle of August.

I've been sick in bed for the past week with a horrible sore throat and just feeling rotten. I finally had enough and went to the doctor today. I have tonsillitis! I've never had that in my life. I did get some antibiotics so hopefully will be feeling much better in the next couple of days.

Spring is really here and also the on again, off again showers. We had a couple of gorgeous sunny days last week - love the sun!

I'm having a garage sale the middle of April so I need to get busy marking things. I have lots of books, magazines, fabric, craft items, vintage dishes, and some vintage furniture pieces that I purchased to refinish. I never got around to them so someone else can take them home for a redo! I'm also selling lots of kitchen items including a vintage blender and a food processor. Hopefully our Illinois Fund will increase in size by the time it's all over.

Spring Is Finally Here!!

It's not officially the first day of Spring but it's arrived in our part of the country! The trees are blooming and there are daffodils everywhere! The bright yellow just makes me so happy and makes me feel good.

Steph and I were driving to her doctor's appointment this afternoon and saw a whole bunch of daffodils by the road. I told her that I think God makes them bloom early in Spring so that we can be cheered after a long, gray winter. It's just a taste of things to come and He made it all for our enjoyment!

Confession

I have been neglecting my blog. I have a confession to make. I've been on Facebook! I've reconnected with old friends from high school, played on FarmVille and Country Life, and enjoyed reading what people are doing in real time. But I've neglected the friends that I have in the blogging world. I am sorry.

Am I giving up on FaceBook? Nope! Am I going to regularly post on my blog again? Sure!

The tooth, or non-tooth since it was pulled, is healing nicely. I can chew on that side again! I'm still trying to get an appointment for the root canal. I had the alarm set on my cell phone to call at 4:58 pm last Thursday. The alarm went off at 4:56. I said to myself "you need to call in 2 minutes" and held the cell phone in my hand to remind myself. At 5:18 I realized I was still holding the phone in my hand and hadn't called! I will try again this Thursday. I have another alarm set on my phone. Now I just need an alarm to remind me the alarm is going to ring so that I can remember to make the call!

It's still raining here. That is normal for a Pacific NW winter when you're on the west side of the mountains. I bet that my rainy, gray winter days don't look too bad to those poor folks who have had feet of snow this winter! The sun is coming later this week and I can't wait. All the rain makes you enjoy every little bit of sun that peaks through the clouds.

Tooth Update

My broken molar is now gone!! Since that one was hurting the dentist and I decided it was time for me to part company with the tooth. I will call to get in for an appointment and he will do a root canal on the other broken tooth and then I will have to save to have a crown put on. But at least I will be able to keep the tooth.

I can't begin to tell you what a blessing this dentist visit was today. It was absolutely answered prayer. I walked into the clinic and it was like night and day compared to the other place that I had been. Dentists and hygenists in the area volunteer their time and there is no cost to anyone for any service. I had the most wonderful dentist today. He was so kind and so gentle explaining everything as he went along. As he was putting the needle in my gum the hygenist was standing on the other side patting my shoulder. I looked up once and she had her eyes closed and was praying for me!

Opposite the chair I was sitting in there was a picture hanging on the wall. It had been painted and given to the dentist that runs the clinic. It was a picture of a man in a dentist chair, the dentist working in his mouth and standing beside the dentist was Jesus!! It was just so peaceful and serene and I knew that Jesus was right there in that room.

I am having very little pain tonight. It is sore from where I got the shots but not much pain at all. Thank you all so much for your prayers!!! God was making me be patient in this situation and when I waited on His timing it turned out the best!!!

Dentist Update

I just had someone comment this morning asking about my dental situation. I still have 2 broken teeth. I have been to one community dental clinic 2 times and nothing was done except to tell me that I needed a root canal/crown on the molar or I could have it pulled. I have decided to have it pulled. I have an appointment there on 2/15 and hopefully they will pull the tooth. This place doesn't seem to want to do much of anything to anyone that goes there but they are happy to collect your $40 fee each time and then tell you that you need to be referred out.

I found out that the church we attend, New Heights, now has a dental clinic. They have had a medical clinic for quite some time which is free to anyone that doesn't have insurance. In order to get an appointment at the dental clinic you have to call in on Thursday from 5 to 6 PM. They only take 4 openings a week as it is a part-time clinic. I have been calling for the last 3 weeks and have been #5 on the list which means I don't get an appointment and have to call again next week. This morning New Heights called me and they had a cancellation!! Praise the Lord!! I am going this morning at 11:15 and they will do a root canal on the broken tooth that is more in the front of my mouth so I won't lose the tooth!! They will put on a temporary crown and I can save the money to get the crown put on in the near future!!

God is good and I so appreciate all your prayers.

Busy, Busy, Busy

I have neglected my poor blog! It just seems like things have gotten so busy around here. When I went back to work it was for 2 days a week. The truck repair service where I work has really been hit by the economy over the past year and a half. But we have been praying for the business and it is picking up. So much so that for the last 3 weeks I've been working 3 days instead of 2! That probably won't be permanent but it's nice to have the extra income.

I keep busy chauffeuring my teenager around and being involved in all of her activities. Then there's the house to keep up, soap to make, and the list continues. I suddenly feel like I hardly have time for myself, to write on my blog, or do any of the other things that I like to do. But it's better to be busy than sitting around doing nothing!! I will make time before bed at least once a week to write on my blog and read other blogs.

The rain is back in full force here. I don't know about you, but I'm really ready for Spring. I get excited thinking about planting seeds, flowers, and veggies. I want to have some kind of vegetable garden this year even if it's on my patio. It would be nice to eat from the garden all summer. And I will buy locally in quantity so that I can put up things to enjoy next winter.

My little grand baby is growing and in another 8 weeks we will be able to find out whether it's a boy or a girl. For now, I'm going to knit a white blanket. I have to do something for this little one and can't wait another 8 weeks to get started on a project!! One more thing to add to my busyness!!

A Wedding

There was a wedding in our family yesterday! My oldest daughter, Missy, got married! It was a really nice small wedding at the court house in Vancouver. Afterward we went to The Nines Hotel in Portland for a small reception. The hotel was beautiful and we were in the restaurant on the 15th floor. You could see all the lights of Portland and it was just breathtaking! I snapped a few pictures but a friend of Missy and Sammy's took lots of pictures. As soon as we get them I will post more.

Sophie Is Now All Grown Up

Do you remember this tiny little thing that we brought home at the end of May? My girl, Sophie, has grown up! Yesterday evening we took her to the vet to have her spayed. I can't believe that she is old enough for that already. In fact, she was way past time. I think she probably was a little slow becoming "mature" due to the fact that she was so little when she was born.

Steph and I got her this afternoon and she is doing just fine. About this time every evening Sophie turns into "The Terrorist" - running the house, trying to snatch people's legs as they walk by, and generally getting into everything she's not supposed to. Tonight, however, she is quietly laying on a blanket in the downstairs bathroom. She's still drugged up from the surgery! It's been pleasantly quiet. But we're so glad she's home because we missed her terribly.

The vet said to keep her confined in a small area for 7 to 10 days. Yeah right! That will probably last until tomorrow and then I'm sure she'll be wanting out. I'm just glad that this is over with, there will be no babies at our house, and maybe Sophie will mellow out a bit. Time will tell!

Happy New Year

We've got big festivities planned for New Year's Eve. My grandson, Christien, is spending the night. We're having our usual taco dip tray and sparkling cider. Then we'll play games and at midnight run outside to beat on pots and pans and shout "Happy New Year".

I may not be on the computer right at midnight so I wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year now. I know in my heart that 2010 is going to be a great year!!!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your love, friendship, and prayers this past year. Even though I've never met many of you I feel you are some of my dearest friends - the kind of friends that you can always count on to be there for you. You have made my world a much happier place and I love you all!!

Dentist Update

I got in to see a dentist this morning - same one I saw about 2 years ago to have a tooth pulled. I had to pay upfront for the office visit, had an x-ray, and saw the dentist for about 2 minutes. The verdict was what I expected - root canal and crown for $1800 or pull the tooth for $200.

I immediately started crying in the dentist chair and felt like an idiot. They have no payment options (99% of dentists in this area don't) but I can apply for a no interest payment option through a third party company. I am applying for the payment option. If I can make payments then I will get the tooth fixed. If not, then I have no choice but to pull the tooth. I am trusting the Lord in this decision and I will be ok with whatever He wants me to do. I will let you know the outcome.

Finding A Dentist

In the last 3 weeks I have had two teeth break. One is a molar on the upper right side that has always been in crooked. I was eating a pretzel and the whole front of the tooth broke off. Thank God it has not started to hurt. Because I have no dental insurance and very little money I called a local community dental center. They will see you and bill you after you pay the first $40.

The first visit I paid my $40 and saw a temporary dentist who was filling in for the regular dentist who was on vacation. She looked at my tooth and said I'd have to come back to see the regular dentist. She did put some bonding material over the tooth so it would not be open. Last week I went back to see the regular dentist. He was not very friendly, to say the least. He comes in, pokes a metal instrument in the tooth which made it hurt, and tells me that I need a root canal and a crown to the tune of $2000. They don't do that there so he'd have to refer me out. I told him that if I had $2000 I would not need to be at a community clinic. He said the only other alternative was to pull the tooth which is fine with me. He said, in a very terse voice, that he would see what he can do to save the tooth and tells me to make another appointment.

I go to the front desk and they tell me they will have to call me when there is an appointment available! I still have not heard from them. I am trying not to be picky as I don't have a lot of options but I have to say that so far I've not exactly gotten a sense that this community clinic really wants to help.

Last night I was brushing my teeth and the back of the tooth on the lower left side broke off. This one is a problem because I have had two molars pulled on that side and have one tooth left next to the broken one. If I had this one pulled then I would probably have to have the one next to it pulled and would have no teeth left on the lower left side. I have to try and save this tooth.

I have been in tears all day about this because I know there is not a good dentist in Vancouver who would even talk to me with no insurance and little money. I have been praying and praying that the Lord would lead me to some kind hearted dentist who would fix my tooth and let me make payments. I am just praying that this tooth will not start to hurt and that I won't end up with an infection in either.

I just needed to share this and ask if you would pray for and with me in this situation.

Beautiful Christmas Day!

While most of the rest of the country is struggling with snow, ice and rain we had a sunny Christmas day!

Last night Steph and I went to 11 pm Christmas Eve service at a little church down the street. It was a beautiful service and truly made it feel like Christmas. When we came out of the church there was fog that was enveloping everything and it just felt so peaceful.

This morning our little family opened presents at home. I got a new pink soap scale - my favorite color. I also got a new purse which I just love. Steph got new fur lined boots, moccasins (which she said was her favorite present), a new coat, and lots of goodies in her stocking.

We went to Missy's for dinner and had such a wonderful time. The two youngest grandsons got things to ride on outside so they enjoyed a dry day riding their new toys in the church parking lot across the street. We ate lots, opened presents, and visited. This time next year we will have a new little one to spoil with love and presents. I can't wait.

I am so tired of all the preparation the last couple of days. I didn't get much baking done so tried to do a marathon session last night and this morning. Tomorrow is definitely going to be a pajama and movie day.

A Sophie Kind of Christmas

We HAD our usual 7 ft tree in place with all the lights on it. In 24 hours Miss Sophie had knocked it over 3 times! Then she started behaving herself and only knocked it over once a day. Last week I came home from work to find the daily mess and decided that was it! Down came the tree. I had a small tree in the garage that had been in Steph's room. It had lights on it and all the decorations. All I had to do was untie the plastic bag. That tree went in the space about our gas fireplace.

This weekend, after the last of my orders were shipped out, I finished the Christmas decorating. I put the Nativity set under the tree (that is above the fireplace because of Sophie - see paragraph #1) and it looks beautiful. This set has great sentimental value as Steph's Great-grandma Jerry, who is 95 years old, made this in 1960. Someday it will look lovely in Steph's first home.

Last night Steph and I wrapped presents. I love this paper!! I have this thing about all my presents being wrapped in the same paper - I know, I'm a little OCD. But if you notice the picture of the presents you'll see shoes, plastic storage boxes and other stuff. That's because the presents are in my bedroom closet. Why? See paragraph #1!! And since we can't put them under the tree because the tree is above the fireplace, they will stay in my closet until Christmas morning. Otherwise we will find missing bows and shredded paper.

It's a Sophie kind of Christmas around here and we're loving every minute of it!!

She got in-person lessons from a lady that lives close to her in Michigan and then we have been chatting about soap via email and Facebook.! Aren't her soaps just adorable? She kept telling me that she didn't want to post pictures because they weren't neat and perfect! I love the rustic look of her soaps and I wish I wasn't so much of a perfectionist so that my soaps would look like hers!! You have to stop by her blog and read the story of her soaps. Monday Night

I'm going to be working the rest of this week and three days next week. God is blessing with extra time and money just when I need it to help out at Christmas.

It was a very busy weekend as I was finishing up items to ship out today. But everything got done and taken to the post office. The treasures are on their way to places across the US to brighten someone's Christmas. Sometimes I wish I could be on the other end when the package arrives or the gift is given. I get so much joy from the things that I make and I'd like to see the joy that those things give others. I guess that's why I do what I do - for the joy!

When I used to make purses I would pray over every one as I was sewing it. I would ask the Lord's blessings on the person that would receive that purse. Since I don't make purses much anymore I'll have to start praying over bars of soap and bottles of lotion!

I'm getting excited about Christmas. I'm going to start baking this week - that's one of my favorite Christmas things to do. I've got a few last minute crafts to get done and gifts to purchase. I usually knit dishcloths but didn't have time for that this year. Guess I'll have to start knitting after Christmas and give them for Valentine's Day!!!

Baby It's Cold Outside

We are in the middle of a real cold spell! Normally it barely gets below freezing. Tonight it's supposed to be down to 15. It's been that cold since last Friday and we've had winds to go along with it too. I've been staying snug and warm inside getting sewing projects finished for customers. They are finally done and I get to move on to some fun stuff now.

Today I made Cottage Rose soap and lotion. Tomorrow it will be Blue Bonnet. I have a couple more batches of soap to make but not sure what scents yet. I think that Peppermint Candy will be one - that is our new favorite scent around here. Maybe some Citrus Basil as I haven't done that one in a while and it's a favorite with the guys.

I got the tree up on Saturday and it has been a fight ever since trying to keep Sophie out of the tree. She knocked it over 3 times in less than 24 hours. Today I made a "moat" of aluminum foil around the bottom of the tree. She hates foil. That worked really well - until Sophie figured out that if she got on the back of the couch and leaned way over she could reach the tree. Out came the water bottle but it's a constant battle. She is one determined cat!

Steph and I have been having the nicest evenings. Sunday night I was sewing and she was laying in my bed. I put White Christmas in the computer and we watched that together while I finished some things. Tonight we watched Santa Claus Is Coming To Town - you know the old one with the clay looking characters?? Steph loves those old Christmas programs and so do I!

I haven't even started any shopping yet and need to get a little done. I have to get for Steph and for the grandsons. The adults are going to just wish each other Merry Christmas this year as everyone's finances are so tight. I kind of like it that way anyway. It makes more of the focus on Jesus and less on the presents.

I've saved the very best news for last! I am going to be a grandma again! Missy is pregnant with her third child and the baby will be here in July. Since I have two grandsons you can guess what I'm hoping for - a granddaughter! I can't wait until Missy is far enough along to find out the gender so I can start making things for the baby. Her youngest is 11 so it's been a while since we've had to think about babies around here. We're just thrilled to pieces. I'm already thinking about blankets, burp cloths, bibs, and anything else that I can possibly sew. This is going to be such fun.

I have been wanting to add a skin lotion to my line for a long, long time - over 6 months. It's finally done!! I have to admit that I tend to obsess about things - it has to be just right down to the packaging. I've tried and tested until I feel like I have a wonderful product to offer! It's 96% natural and made with a paraben free preservative.

This lotion is thick, creamy and feels so good on the skin. It's made with my favorite shea butter, grape seed oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil, aloe juice, and lots of other ingredients that are good for your skin.

I have two scents right now - Oatmeal Milk & Honey and Peppermint Candy. We are in love with the Peppermint Candy! I got that scent for Christmas but may keep it all year long. I'll be adding 3 more scents later in the week - I'm not telling what they'll be. You'll have to check my Etsy shop to find out!!!

I have been making soap like crazy this week - trying to get ready for bazaars and Christmas sales in my Etsy shop. I am so excited about the new scents that I have, especially the Christmas scents. I am finally going to be offering body moisture lotion - made with shea butter, cocoa butter, avocado oil, grapeseed oil and other ingredients that are good for the skin! These two new soaps will be in my Etsy shop on Sunday. Christmas scents and Body Moisture will be listed the day after Thanksgiving. Please stop by to see what's new!

This pretty pink soap is called Grace. This scent is comparable to Philosophy's Amazing Grace - a blend of lemon, rose, cinnamon and musk. Such a light, bright clean scent. I can't get enough of this.

Key Lime - I don't think there's any description needed for this one! Juicy and tart, just like key limes.

Just When You Think You Know Someone

Here's my sweet daughter Stephany. She is very artsy, dresses funky, loves black, has 2 piercings in her lip, and loves to listen to weird music (what teenager doesn't love weird music)! For a long time all this bugged me no end - especially the piercings. But I came to realize that you have to pick your battles. I've come to accept that Stephany is her own person and loves being different.

Yesterday we had to go to Battle Ground so Steph could get her new glasses ordered. I figured since we were out there I'd take a side trip to Old Town and visit the Vintage Gathering Christmas Emporium. This kind of event is something that I absolutely love and have not done enough of it for a long time. Anything vintage, cottage, shabby, pink and roses is right up my alley.

Steph and I stepped inside the store and both of us went crazy! I knew that Steph liked some things vintage - she loved her sister's store in Camas when she used to go there. But yesterday I saw a side of Steph that I never knew existed. She told me that when she gets her first apartment she wants to decorate it in cottage and vintage style!! Then she Tweeted that she'd love to have an antique store some day! A girl after my own heart (actually she had my heart from the first minute I laid eyes on her)!

On the way home we talked about how much fun it would be to have a store again. I told her that it was a big undertaking and the finances just weren't there for it right now. However, we could start junking again, re-do treasures, do sales, and maybe have a booth somewhere. Stephany was so excited! That's all she's talked about since yesterday. How much fun is this going to be to have a "partner in crime" to go to sales with!

Just when you think you know someone - especially your own child - they go and surprise you. This is going to be such fun!!

Going Back To Work

I'm going back to work! Debbie, my boss (and friend) at my old place of work, emailed me to see if I'd want to come back. I called her this morning and said yes! It will only be 2 days a week but that's ok. Next week will be my last unemployment check and I will be starting back next Wednesday! God's timing is so good!!

I could get another extension on my unemployment but I just want to work. I need to be out in the world and working my brain. I will be working on Wednesday and Friday - the schedule will be great as I will have time to work on my soap business here at home the other days.

The best part is that I don't have to go get a work wardrobe because I can wear jeans! Yay!!

Busy Weekend

We survived whatever it was that we had - I don't think it was the full blown flu - and are getting back in the swing of things. The weekend was busy but good.

I feel like I've been living in my kitchen for the past two days. On Saturday I finished up rearranging cupboards and got everything put away. You could actually see the top of the dining room table! Then I found one more box of dishes! I'm not sure where I'm going to put these so I'm going to have to do some rearranging again. I need a hutch or a cabinet as there just isn't enough storage space in my kitchen.

I made baked potato soup and Amish bread for dinner on Saturday. I love that soup and it is so easy to make. There are lots of leftovers so that's what we'll be having for dinner tonight. The family wanted chocolate chip cookies but I was just too tired so those would wait until Sunday.

Sunday we went to Steve's grandma's to help her get some boxes unpacked and sort through her closet. We stopped at Burger King and picked up lunch. She gets so tired of eating the food at the retirement center. It was so cute to watch her eat her cheeseburger and fries - she cleaned up every bite. When we got home from Grandma's I finally got the chocolate chip cookies done and settled in to watch my Sunday night TV programs.

There's lots to do this week as I have some purses to finish up and get more soap made. I got a few more fragrances in the mail on Saturday so this week I'll be making Citrus Basil, Bluebonnet (one of my favorites, and a new men's soap called Leather Jacket. It smells so yummy - kind of a mixture of leather and men's cologne - very masculine.

The Flu Came Knocking

I absolutely love the month of November!! The earth is settling down into it's winter sleep, the holidays are just around the corner, and I get to celebrate my favorite holiday - Thanksgiving!!

I love to plan and cook the whole meal. If I could, I would have a whole house full of people to share the day with me! The more the merrier. It is so wonderful to have this holiday where we can focus on what we are thankful for, eat a wonderful meal, and just the enjoy each others company. No gifts to fuss about, no parties to worry about, no pressure - just pure enjoyment.

Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas. But it has become such a commercial holiday that, to me, the true meaning has been lost. If I could have my way about Christmas it would be 1 gift for each person and the day would be focusing on each other.

I feel sad sometimes that Thanksgiving has gotten lost between Halloween and Christmas. But it doesn't get lost at this house. I refuse to buy anything Christmas related, put up decorations, or even think about gifts until the day after Thanksgiving. It's my own personal way of savoring and remembering this beautiful holiday!

I hope that you will enjoy every single day of November and especially Thanksgiving Day. May you month be filled with blessings and happiness.

New to Me

Grandma Jerry moved into assisted living last week. She turned 95 on Octrober 4th and has been so blessed to be able to live in her own apartment all this time. I went over two days and helped get her moved into her new apartment. We were fortunate enough to have movers but we still had to pack many things. She is all settled in her new place which is very lovely with large windows and a very cozy feeling. It is a two room apartment with a living room and bedroom. She was able to use all of her furniture except for her dining table, a corner hutch, one chair, and the kitchen things.

I was blessed to receive the Kitchenaid mixer that she bought in 1965. It is like brand new! I am just so thrilled because a Kitchenaid has been on my dream list for many years. I have been baking up a storm. I am ordering a dough hook so that I can use it to mix and knead bread. I stand in the kitchen and just look at the mixer, not believing that I finally have one.

Grandma also gave me her gorgeous dining table. I have never had anything so nice in all the years that I've had my own home. Grandma always took such good care of everything that she had and this is no exception. She sent the custom made pads for the top and tablecloths. But the finish is so pretty that I couldn't cover it. I put a simple runner down the middle and put a vintage platter and a rose covered dish in the center. I bought the dish at a sale about 5 years ago - it looks like Limoge but isn't - and now I have a place to display it. It's now time to spruce up the dining room with curtains, pictures, and make a curtain for Justin's bookshelf so all the junk doesn't show!

Missy, Sammy, and Christien are coming over tomorrow evening for supper - we're celebrating Christien's 11th birthday - our whole family will be able to gather around the table together for the very first time. I truly am a blessed person!!

It's Late

Just A Little More Fall Color

I had to drive to Battle Ground this afternoon to drop something off at the eye doctor. It is a gorgeous sunny day so I put my camera in my purse in hopes of getting some good pictures of the trees. I stopped in the Maple Grove Church parking lot as the red and gold of these trees caught my eye. I took one picture and then the batteries died in my camera! I knew I should have stuck in extra batteries. So here's one last picture to enjoy until the next sunny day.

This is my favorite time of the year. The trees are at their peak right now - absolutely gorgeous! This will probably be the last really good weekend because the rains have started. We had a really hard rain and thunder storm today which took a lot of the leaves off the trees. God is so good to bless us with such beauty to enjoy.

Autumn Memories

When I was a small girl growing up in Illinois we had a very large yard with lots and lots of big trees. In the Fall the yard would be full of fallen leaves. It was a family affair for all of us to help rake leaves. We'd work part of the day raking huge piles of leaves in the yard. Then my sweet daddy would let my sister and I (and any neighborhood kids) play in the leaves. What a time we'd have making tunnels in the piles, running and jumping in them, building forts and having pretend wars.

After we were all done playing Daddy would have to start raking again! But he never complained about it -- he enjoyed seeing us have so much fun. Then, as it would come on late afternoon, the leaves got moved to the ditch by our house to be burned. How much fun that was! Daddy would start the fires and then we'd ride our bikes in the street through the smoke. The smell of burning leaves was wonderful!

There are so few places that will let you burn leaves anymore. Too worried about air pollution or some such thing. Six years ago I made a trip back home in October. It had been many years since I'd been home in the Fall. I was driving through the little town I grew up in and smelled this very familiar scent. Someone was actually burning leaves! I had to drive down the street until I could find where they were burning. The sight and the smell brought back a wonderful flood of childhood memories!

You put in your address and tell how far you want to travel. It then lists sales in your area. You add your address and it maps the best route for you. Print out the directions and you're set to go. 3 Column Blog

I've decided that I need more room on my blog. I have wanted a 3 column template for a long time but could never find an easy free one. Today I visited Six in the NorthWest for the first time. She has a lovely blog and guess what I found at the bottom? A link for a free 3 column blog template! It even has the instructions on how to do it.

It's going to be a bit of a process because I have to save all my widgets and then reinstall on the new template. But I'm excited to try it. I'm telling you all this so that if you come visit and, for some reason, there's nothing here - it's because I've messed something up!! I will back up this blog just in case! My Phone Interview

I had my 2nd phone interview with Memorial Hospital in Springfield, IL this morning. The first was with human resources and this one was with the hiring manager. Right off the bat she told me that she had never done a phone interview before. When I talked to the recruitment department it sounded like they were making an exception to do my interview by phone since I was still in WA. From what the mgr told me this morning it sounded like that was true!!

Everything went really well and the lady that I spoke with was so nice. The position would be in patient pre-registration and I would be doing phone and computer work. Hours would be 8 to 4:30 and only 6 or 7 Saturdays a year. The job description said that it would every other weekend and hours of 9:30 to 6. I asked about that and was told what I'm interviewing for is a different position - fine with me because I love the hours and the no weekends! If they hire me I would be starting by the end of October!

Now I wait, which is the hardest part for me. I can truly feel God's hand working out all the little details of this. As He opens doors I am walking through. I can't imagine getting hired for a position by having a phone interview but I know that God works miracles. If this is truly His will then it will happen. I get so wrapped up in the job details that I forget about the finances to make this huge move of 2000 miles! God has those details worked out too and I am trusting. He knows the need and will provide.

I've been reading the Old Testament lately. My In Touch devotional has led me there and it has been such a joy! I love reading the stories of God's people and God's miracles. This morning I was reading 2 Chronicles 20. It's about the Moabites, Ammonites, and Meunites that came to make war on Jehoshaphat. God had instructed Moses and the Israelites headed toward the promised land not to aggravate these people. They obeyed and avoided a confrontation.

However, during Jehoshaphat's reign the Moabites, Ammonites and Meunites marched toward Judah with the intent to attack. When Jehoshaphat learned of this the very first thing he did was call the people together in front of the temple to pray! He didn't try to think of what he should do, try to make his own plans, or even hesitate. He went to the Lord in prayer. The prayer in verses 6 to 10 is beautiful. The very last sentence of the prayer says "We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you."

Jehoshaphat was waiting on instruction from the Lord to see if he should fight or not. He knew what God had told them in the past. The ending of the story is that God told them to fight, gave them instructions, and made them victorious over Israel's enemies!

When I read this it just touched my heart so much and has been with me all day. When I am in a situation that worries me where do I turn my eyes? What is the first thing I think of? I usually start running the scenario through my head, trying to plan things out, and wonder what to do. That is my humanness. The first thing I should be doing is calling out to God and keeping my eyes upon Him! God has the answers. He knows the plan. He is waiting for me to put my eyes on Him, pray and wait for His answer! I will only be victorious when I pray and wait on the Lord!

Beef Vegetable Soup

It was a chilly day here yesterday - perfect soup weather! I made a big pot of beef vegetable soup for supper and it tasted so good. I thought I'd share the recipe.

1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 small onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced (I use the minced garlic in a jar)
1 lb beef stew meat, cut into bite sized pieces
1 2 lb bag frozen mixed vegetables
3 large potatoes, cubed
1 to 2 cups chopped cabbage
5 cans beef broth
1/2 cup red wine (optional)
salt and pepper to taste

Saute onions in vegetable oil in an 8 qt pot. When onions are translucent add stew meat and cook until browned. Add garlic and cook for a minute longer. (Note: I salt and pepper the onions while they are cooking and then add more salt and pepper to the meat while it cooks.) When the meat is ready add the rest of the ingredients. If you need more liquid you can add more broth or water. Cook until the veggies are soft - about 30 minutes. The soup is better if you can cook it longer so, if I have time, I turn the heat down and simmer for an hour or two. You can also do this recipe in the crock pot and cook on low all day. Just before serving I taste and add more salt and pepper if needed. If you are hesitant to add the red wine I have to tell you that it adds so much richness to the soup! Try it and I bet you'll like it - merlot or burgundy are the best to use.

This makes a big pot of soup. There are 4 of us and I have enough left over for another meal tonight. Enjoy!!

Kind Words and Dear Friends

I received an email this morning from a dear friend that visited my blog a couple of years ago. I will not mention her name as I know that she is a very private person. I had decided that I wanted my blog to take a different direction from ranting and griping to glorifying the Lord. God lead me to write a post about the song "It Is Well With My Soul" (I can't find the post but I added the music). On that day the Lord led this beautiful person to my blog. Nothing is ever coincidence and those words that the Lord led me to write were what she needed to read at that moment. This lady has just touched my heart so much and I am humbled by her words. Here is part of what she had to say:

"Your posts have so moved me on several layers. You always inspire me, and if you inspire me you have to be inspiring hundreds of others. This is a big Thank You for being who you are, sharing your life with us, and the love and faith you have in our Lord."

It is because of the Lord, and all of you, that my journey through this life is easier. You all inspire me and you touch my heart. I read every comment that is left and am blessed by each one. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for blessing my life!

The Closet is Done!

I finally got the closet all organized tonight. It looked like a huge job but after I got started it wasn't bad at all. I needed some cubbies but couldn't spend the money right now so I improvised with cardboard boxes. I taped them all together so they wouldn't be sliding around. I think it worked really well. I have a few more things to go back in - sheets and pillowcases on the shelf and the box of computer things - and then it's complete. I just wanted to show the area I set up for my sewing and craft things. The other end is plastic bins with pictures, office supplies, and other miscellaneous stuff. Now I'm ready to start cutting fabric tomorrow and start sewing.

I found some things that I had forgotten about, like 2 wonderful old flour sacks that are going to make the best pillows! You can see them in the top right cubbie. They are soft and faded - just the best!

Here's the Fall fabric I got today. I love the scenes with the barns, pumpkins, and baskets of fruit. It is much prettier in person and has gold metallic accents around all the pumpkins. I think this will make the cutest purses!

It was a beautiful day here today and supposed to be more of the same for tomorrow. Then starting on Monday it will be rainy and in the 60's - the Fall weather is finally getting here. Now it's time to get the porch decorated.

I am off to get the closet finished before I go to bed. Have a wonderful Lord's day tomorrow!!

A Good Day

Let me start out by saying that the closet still isn't organized! I've been trying - not too hard - to get that done but the kids keep me busy running or I find some other excuse to put it off. However, I have to get it done tomorrow. About 6 years ago I started making purses and tote bags and selling them on eBay and at craft shows. For about 3 years I did very well on eBay until the market got saturated and the prices came down so much I wasn't even making my labor costs back. So I decided to turn to soapmaking and put the sewing machine away. I had actually gotten burned out on purses and was ready for something new.

Today I got a call from a former customer who wanted to know if I still made purses. I explained that I hadn't sewn any for 3 years. She said that she wanted one and had two gals at her office that wanted to buy too. She told me what she wanted, I told her the price and she paid - I sold 3 purses in a matter of 5 minutes! Now I'm excited to do them and have all kinds of ideas running through my head again. But the closet has to get cleaned out so I can see what supplies I have and what I need to get. Oh darn - an excuse to go to Joanns! LOL!

My purse business has been brought back to life and I'm glad. I needed something to get me out of the funk that I've been in. I've been praying for the Lord's help in this area and He gave me something to do. I will not be selling them on eBay though. I will have them in my Etsy shop and on my website along with soap and other goodies.

I got the cutest John Deere fabric for one of the purses that was ordered (see above) and, of course, had to buy another piece that is pink paisley with the John Deere logo. I love pink! That one I'm going to "girlie up" with rhinestones and ruffles.

But the day gets better! I was able to eat pizza tonight for the first time in a couple of months. I only had one piece because I didn't want to push it but it tasted to good!!! The kids were so excited that we were going to have a Friday pizza night. That used to be our usual Friday night thing. After dinner Steph got invited to spend the weekend with a friend, Justin got invited to spend the weekend with a friend, and the house is quiet. I have two days to myself - no running kids around, no kids coming over - it's going to be great!

I had a phone interview on Thursday with Memorial Hospital in Springfield, IL. They are forwarding my application to the department manager for review and I will know in a week if they want me for an in-person interview. While this is very exciting news, it's also a little daunting. I would have to fly back there for the interview. The cost of a plane ticket is not in my budget so I have been praying about it since Thursday. I believe that the Lord is going to help provide a way through my business here at home! I don't ever expect Him to just hand me money but it sure is nice when He shows you a way to work so He can provide that way. Of course, my family in IL is very excited about the possibility of Steph and I moving back there. We are excited about it too. We just have to get over this one hurdle. God will open the doors if this plan is truly His will for us - I know that with all my heart.

My weekend is going to be good and I hope that yours is too!!

Sunny Second Day of Fall

Who would have thought we'd have 95 degrees in Western WA on the First Day of Fall? Not me - but we did and it was hot! Today is another sunny day but supposed to be much cooler.

I'll be hibernating upstairs today as my grandson, Justin, has the stomach flu. He's downstairs so we're trying not to go into the germy area. Hopefully Steph and I don't get it! So since I'm going to be in my room I'm going to organize my closet. I have a pretty good sized closet that has to double as clothes and craft storage. I'd take before pictures but it is way to embarrassing!! I hate clutter in my house so I tend to be one of those people that gets rid of the clutter by shoving it in a closet. As long as I don't see it then it doesn't exist, right? At least until I open the closet door!

I truly am going to try and get better about posting pictures on my blog. I just have to get in the habit of carrying my camera around with me. Several times I've seen things I thought would make great blog pictures only to realize that my camera is upstairs and I'm downstairs. So we'll start with the closet re-do if I get that done today.

I Miss This!

I miss junking, fixing up, and going to shows. It wasn't so much about making a lot of money - that was always nice - but about the creative process and the thrill of the hunt for the next treasure. We had a whole group of gals that we would do shows with. Then everyone drifted their own way. I miss it.
I've decided that I'm going to do this again - for myself. It will give me a creative outlet and I'll get out to meet new friends in the process!

I have the whole winter to create and get ready for Spring shows. I will share treasures as I get them done. This is going to be such fun!!

It's Hot Again!

This morning Steph and I left the house at 7:15 for her early morning counseling appointment. It was so cold! I turned the heater on in the car. This afternoon we're getting east winds and it's 90 degrees! It's supposed to be this way for the next 3 days. I'm hoping this is summer's last blast of heat. It's been a very hot summer here and we've had record heat several times. I want Fall!

I'm dying to start decorating for Fall but am going to hold back until at least October 1st. My front porch needs a good cleaning from the summer grime and cobwebs. That will be the first order of business. Then on to the pretty Fall colors and pumpkins.

Later in the week I'm hoping to get started on a baby quilt for a dear friend's grandbaby that is due to arrive in December. I'm trying to decide between a rag quilt or a regular quilt. Since I've not done a regular one before this might be the time to try since it will be a small project. I will post pictures of the progress. It will also be my first adventure in machine quilting but the pattern calls for straight line quilting through each square so that should be fairly simple. It will give me practice with handling the quilt in the sewing machine, etc.
