Happy Memorial Day

Happy Memorial Day! This day never passes without thoughts my sweet daddy. He was a veteran of WWII and it was the proudest accomplishment of his life.

The day also holds fond memories of my granny and how we would pick peonies from her yard, put them in foil covered coffee cans, and go to all the cemetaries to decorate the graves of family members. Granny called it "Decoration Day". I miss that. I'm here in WA state and all my family is in IL. I wish I could be there today to put some peonies on Granny's grave.

In the midst of all the cookouts, picnics, and other fun activities, please take a moment to pray for those service people that have passed away and remember those that are still serving. It is because of them that we are free to celebrate this day.

God bless America!

I agree with you. I think of my dad, my brother and uncle on this day. All were brave men and proud to serve in the Military protecting us.

Without these men and women willing to stand up and fight for our freedom we would be lost.

I couldn't agree more with you and with Joanne who commented right before me. This was a touching post. My sister lives in Washigton, too. It's so beautiful there! My best friend moved to Il.

It has been so long since I heard it called Decoration Day, that I'd completely forgotten that. I recall hearing it called that as a child, too.

I remember doing that same thing with my Grandma...we put those cans (or mason jars sometimes) full of flowers (mixed from her yard...heavy on roses) on the graves of all the relatives in the town cemetary...alot!! She called it decoration day too. I think it is a wonderful tradition.
I am so proud to have many Great uncles (my beloved Grandma's brothers) who served in WWII and cousins who served (and a couple died) in Vietnam, and sure appreciate our soldiers today too. Our little town has a big banner that says "thanks to the 145th..we LOVE you!!" ..this is the local Army National guard guys who keep going back and forth to Afghanistan mostly. They didn't take it down after Memorial day.
Our town cemetary has about 50 flags all in a row..just beautiful..plus a zillion tiny ones on the graves...so touching.
