Dove vs Soap

Have you seen the new Dove ads? The ones where they talk about how soap leaves a scum on your skin? And then shows an artistically enhanced picture of what soap scum might look like on your skin? It's pretty disgusting looking as the person stands there with all this white stuff all over their skin. Pretty good propoganda to get people to buy their product.

Here are the ingredients in Dove:

sodium cocoyl isethionate, stearic acid, coconut acid, sodium tallowate, water, sodium isethionate, sodium stearate, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium cocoate or palm kernelate, fragrance, sodium chloride, tetrasodium EDTA, trisodium etidronate, BHT, titanium dioxide and
sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate

Here are the ingredients in my handmade soap and the same ones that many soapmakers use:

Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil , Hydrogenated Palm Kernel Oil, Hydrogenated Palm Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Fragrance or Essential Oils.

Yup, handmade soap might leave a little scum on your skin (nothing like what is depicted in the Dove commercial) but it also doesn't contain a bunch of chemicals that you can't pronounce. Chemicals that are absorbed through the skin and into the body. I know which I'd rather be using and it isn't Dove.

Yep I sure know what type of soap I'd rather use to & it doesn't come all wrapped up & over packaged either.

Now, this is something I have been wanting to learn, making my own soap. I cannot use any fragrances in soap and have used ivory for years (always wondered about ll the chemicals). My hubby & I took a trip to Europe where they used oatmeal soap, which I fell in love with. It was made of honey and oatmeal and just made your skin feel so fantastic. Would you happen to know a recipe for oatmeal soap? Homemade is always best!

Makes me wonder why they almost insisted that I use Dove (for sensitive skin) and ONLY Dove while I was going through radiation. *shudder*

Well, now that it's over, I can go back to handmade soap. Life is weird, huh?

The ironic thing is, that Dove's ingredients do include soap.
"sodium tallowate" is saponified beef fat
"sodium cocoate or palm kernelate" is saponified coconut oil or palm kernel oil (both ingredients in your soap too, just with a different name)
Dove is a mixture of soap and chemical detergents. I don't know why they say they are so much better than soap, when Dove actually contains soap.

Do you mind if I link to your blog and this article on my blog in the future? I am just getting real interested in natural soaps and would love to share this with my readers. Thanks for this great information.
